Our U3A

The U3A is a national organisation which consists of local U3As all over the UK which are run entirely by volunteers.

Local U3As draw upon the knowledge, experience and skills of their own members to organise and provide interest groups and the chance to study such subjects as art, languages, music, history, life sciences, philosophy, computing, crafts, photography. There are also activity groups such as bowls, keep fit and walking.

Monks Brook U3A is the second U3A group in Chandlers Ford. It was formed in 2003 when Chandlers Ford U3Abecame too big. There is now a third group in the area, Eastleigh U3A, and some activities are open to members from all 3 groups.

We meet on the 1st Wednesday of each month, usually at 2pm (doors open at 1.45pm) at St Boniface Centre, Hursley Road, Chandlers Ford.

Reluctantly, we have had to place a temporary hold on enrolling new members. However, we have a waiting list and if you would like to know more about the group with a view to putting your name down please contact our  Membership Secretary

Newsletter Developments

The first Monks Brook U3A newsletter was produced in January 2003 and it has been produced every 2 months since then.  It contains information about events, contact details for the committee and organisers, and other information of interest to members.  Most copies are distributed by a team of volunteers.

Loran Waite was the first editor and Mary Peterson took over from her in November 2003 (Newsletter No 6).

Initially the newsletter was in A4 format produced using Word.  In May 2006 (Newsletter No 21) a switch was made to Publisher and an A5  folded booklet was produced.

In November 2007 (Newsletter No 30) photographs taken by members were added to the front cover.  Click the link below to see a record of all the photos used to date.

For Mary's last newsletter, in March 2010 (Newsletter No 44), colour was added to the cover of the magazine.

Gerald Ponting took over as editor from May 2010 (Newsletter No 45)
