Welcome to the History of Movies Group

Welcome to the History of Movies group. This group's aim is to view and discuss films of yesteryear from about the 1930s to about late 1950s or thereabouts. We aim to view interesting films that show new ways and techniques as well as those filled with nostalga, or which stretch the mind in new directions. Below is a list of past and upcoming films. If you were a member of the group, you would also see where the films will be shown, mostly in members houses.

Our meetings are monthly, on the 3rd Monday, usually at 19:00. The host provides the venue and some nibbles and wine. The film is displayed using our U3A Projector and our DVD player, but may also be sourced from a Sky Box , computer or video tape depending on the film requirements.

Note that if you are logged on and are a member of the Movies Group, extra information is displayed.

Double Indemnity is a 1944 American film noir, directed by Billy Wilder, co-written by Wilder and Raymond Chandler, and produced by Buddy DeSylva and Joseph Sistrom.

The film stars Fred MacMurray as an insurance salesman, Barbara Stanwyck as a provocative housewife who wishes her husband were dead, and Edward G. Robinson as a claims adjuster whose job is to find phony claims. The term double indemnity refers to a clause in certain life insurance policies that doubles the payout in cases when death is caused by accidental means.

21/02/11 19:00Kind Hearts and Coronets (also Georges Melies)

I had billed this as "The Day the Earth Stood Still" (1951 not 2008!) but this proved to be unavailable. So instead we saw the wonderful old Alec Guiness classic from 1949.  (Sadly only 6 members present.)

This was supported by a couple of short silent films from 1902, together with part of a documentary about their maker, Georges Melies. The fantastic 'A Trip to the Moon' is considered a classic of early silent cinema and probably the first 'sci-fi' film.

PARKING SUGGESTION:  As parking is very limited and manoeuvring in the dark is difficult, may  I suggest that you park opposite in Scantabout, such as in Alexandra Road. The road runs parallel to Winchester Road for a short way.
You can of course, check-out St Edwards Church Car Park but if they have a function they do not like it!

15/03/10 19:00The Seventh Seal

The Seventh Seal is a 1957Swedish drama film directed by Ingmar Bergman, about the journey of a medieval knight (Max von Sydow) across a plague-ridden landscape, and a monumental game of chess between himself and the personification of Death, who has come to take his life.  The title refers to a passage from the Book of Revelation, used both at the very start of the film, and again towards the end, beginning with the words "And when the Lamb had opened the seventh seal, there was silence in heaven about the space of half an hour" (Revelation 8:1). Here the motif of silence refers to the "silence of God" which is a major theme of the film.

The Knight takes a squire, a troupe of travelling players and a deaf and dumb girl under his protection as the game is played out. One by one Death exacts his toll, and it is up to Block to stall his opponent for as long as possible if he is to save the lives of those he is trying to protect.

The film is considered a major classic of world cinema. It helped Bergman to establish himself as a world-renowned director and contains scenes which have become iconic through parodies and homages.
